EPR Compliance Questions
Everything you need to know about Extended Producer Responsibility and how Remedy EPR can help
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is an environmental policy approach where producers are given significant responsibility for the treatment or disposal of post-consumer products. It means that manufacturers and importers are responsible for the entire lifecycle of their products, including take-back, recycling, and final disposal of packaging materials.
Any business that manufactures, imports, or distributes packaged goods in the UK, who handle at least 25 tonnes of packaging per year or have an annual turnover starting from £1 million, must comply with EPR regulations. This includes e-commerce sellers, retailers, manufacturers, and importers
EPR fees are charges based on the amount and type of packaging your business places on the market. Fees are calculated using the weight of packaging materials, material type (plastic, paper, glass, steel, etc.), and modulation factors will now apply based on recyclability and recycled content. These fees fund the collection, recycling, and recovery of packaging waste.
PRNs (Packaging Recovery Notes) are evidence that packaging waste has been recycled in the UK. PERNs (Packaging Export Recovery Notes) are evidence that packaging waste has been exported for recycling outside the UK. Both are used by businesses to prove they have met their recycling obligations under EPR regulations.
Remedy EPR software automates the entire compliance process by tracking your packaging data, calculating EPR fees, generating required reports, and ensuring you stay audit-ready. Our platform integrates with your existing systems, provides real-time insights, and helps you optimise your packaging to reduce costs while maintaining compliance.
Non-compliance with EPR regulations can result in significant penalties, including fines up to 5% of annual turnover, legal action, and reputational damage. The Environment Agency actively monitors and enforces EPR compliance, conducting audits and investigations. Using Remedy EPR ensures you stay compliant and avoid these risks.
