Managing UK EPR compliance is more than just filling out forms – it’s about ensuring your business stays up-to-date with ever-changing regulations. This can often involve complex processes like fee calculations, data management, and reporting. Many businesses struggle to stay on top of these tasks, which can lead to costly mistakes and fines.

Why UK EPR Compliance Matters

The UK government has introduced strict Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations to reduce packaging waste and ensure that producers are held accountable for recycling efforts. For Businesses who meet criteria, compliance with these regulations is not optional, it’s a legal requirement.

Small Producers:

A 'small producer' is defined as a business that:

  • Has an annual turnover exceeding £1 million but not exceeding £2 million.
  • Handles more than 25 tonnes but not exceeding 50 tonnes of packaging per year.
  • Small producers are required to:

  • Register with the relevant environmental regulator.
  • Report the type and amount of packaging handled annually.
  • Pay a registration fee.
  • Unlike large producers, small producers are not obligated to pay fees to fund recycling activities.
  • Large Producers:

  • A 'large producer' is defined as a business that:
  • Has an annual turnover exceeding £2 million.
  • Handles more than 50 tonnes of packaging per year.
  • Large producers have additional responsibilities, including:

  • Registering with the relevant environmental regulator.
  • Reporting the type and amount of packaging handled annually.
  • Paying a registration fee.
  • Meeting recycling obligations by obtaining Packaging Recovery Notes (PRNs) or Packaging Export Recovery Notes (PERNs) equivalent to the weight of packaging placed on the market.
  • Paying waste disposal fees from October 2025.
